Maadi Poonga

Maadi Poonga, Tamil for "terrace park", is a 1.85-acre terrace park in Chennai designed for the Greater Chennai Corporation, turning an unused upper level into a shaded, planted public space above the city.

A 1.85-acre terrace park for the Greater Chennai Corporation

In a dense city like Chennai, open land for new parks is scarce. Maadi Poonga takes a different approach: commissioned by the Greater Chennai Corporation, it reclaims an existing 1.85-acre terrace level, exposed to sun and rain and largely unused, and turns it into a landscaped public park.

Our urban design and landscape team laid out walkways, lawns, planters, seating and pergolas suited to an elevated deck, with drainage and waterproofing detailing that protects the structure below. Native and hardy species were chosen for Chennai's heat, and shaded seating areas make the space usable through the day.

Completed in 2024, the result is a cool, green retreat above street level that shows how a terrace park in Chennai can add to Chennai's green cover, reduce heat gain in the structure beneath, and give residents a place to gather.
